About the digital health capability self-assessment tool

This Tool was commissioned by the Australian Digital Health Agency (The Agency), in collaboration with the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) to provide health and care workers across Australia with a mechanism to self-assess their own digital health readiness and plan ongoing development accordingly.

Aligned to the DRAFT Australian Digital Health Capability Framework, the Tool empowers you to evaluate your existing level of competence in digital health. It encompasses the five domains outlined in the DRAFT Australian Digital Health Capability Framework, catering to health and care workers across three tiers of capability The Tool addresses capabilities identified in the DRAFT Australian Digital Health Capability Framework, through your interactions with patients, and health consumers, in your workplace settings.

Why should you self-assess your digital health capabilities?

Digital health is not just about the use of technology, it is about improving the delivery of care.

A key strategy of Australia’s National Digital Health Strategy Framework for Action (ADHA, 2022) is a health workforce confident in delivering care using digital health technologies. To foster confidence and maximise the benefits for health and care workers, service providers, and consumers across diverse healthcare settings, it is imperative to establish a standardised approach to developing the essential digital health capabilities within the workforce.

“A workforce with strong digital health capability ultimately benefits the patient: driving safer, higher quality care and a positive experience where consumers and patients are empowered”. (ADHA, 2021).

This Tool is provided to help you determine your workforce current level of capability across a broad range of digital health areas. The results can be used as a guide to determine areas for further development. This Tool can be repeated at regular intervals to monitor the growth of your workforce digital health capabilities.

Readiness assessment results

Upon completing the Tool, you will be shown the results of your workforce readiness capability level, which is able to be seen at a later date on your 'Dashboard'. Based on your results, specific resources under 'Domain Resources' are provided for domains where additional enhancement of the workforce readiness capability is beneficial.

Results will be categorised as follows:

  • A Formative result will highlight areas for potential further development
  • An Intermediate result may indicate the workforce confidence in utilising digital health technology within their role and workplace
  • A Proficient result may signify their capacity to guide others through peer-led training or mentorship in specific areas.

Below is an example of the summary of results for each domain of the Australian Digital Health Capability Framework (ADHCF):

  • Domain A - Digital Professionalism: Proficient
  • Domain B - Leadership and Advocacy: Intermediate
  • Domain C - Data and Information Quality: Intermediate
  • Domain D - Information Enabled Care and Services: Formative
  • Domain E - Technology: Formative
