Australian Health Informatics Competency Framework (AHICF)

The Australian Health Informatics Competency Framework (AHICF) plays a key role in raising the profile of health informaticians, contributing to a wider recognition of the profession, and defining more clearly the body of knowledge underpinning this discipline.

This competency framework can be used as a basis for recruiting, identifying knowledge gaps, defining professional development and career pathways, and designing educational and training activities. It outlines the competencies required to support organisations and professionals in their digital health skills and career development.

Certified Health Informatician Australasia (CHIA)
credentialing program

The Certified Health Informatician Australasia (CHIA) credentialing program was developed to address the lack of formal recognition of health informatics knowledge and skills in Australia. The CHIA program content is based on the Australian Health Informatics competency framework (AHICF) comprising of 53 health informatics competencies across 6 domains of expertise.

Similar to most professional credentialing programs candidates undertaking the CHIA program are asked to sit and pass an examination, all candidates are given 90 days to complete self-directed study to prepare and sit the CHIA examination. The CHIA examination tests a candidate’s knowledge of health informatics competencies considered to be essential to the profession of health informatics. The major subject areas for the examination are taken directly from the Australian Health Informatics Competency Framework.
